Digipak

Research

I decided to do some research into other Digipaks to get a greater understanding of the marketplace and mechanics, as well as the different types of Digipaks around. I looked into Coldplay's digipak of their album "Ghost Stories" because I really liked their Digipak; the simple yet elegant style, I also liked the extra cover over the plastic CD case which I believe gave the Digipak a higher quality over other competing artists.

Now that I have a detailed understanding of one of the many different types of Digipaks I can start to create my own design. I was to make a design which is simple, yet elegant. Something that catches the customers eye and also relates to my music video. I like the extra cover, in a matte print because I think that it gives the Digipak a high quality finish.

 I also looked at a couple other Album Artworks to get a wider idea of different designs and styles. I found the "minimalistic" look was my favourite choice as it keeps the song open to interpretation. I especially like the flat colours, I think it catches the customers eye and also stands out against other album covers. The three covers to the left as a couple of covers I will take inspiration from. I will try and use the plain and open to interpretation feel of the first cover. The second cover I like because of its mysteriousness and way the alien is looking at you. Lastly I like the way the third cover has used the title of the song in the artwork in such a simple way.

I created a 3D model of my Digipak designs to see, understand and analyse in a way which would be seen in real life. I think that this helps me to improve my work. I also helps me to explain exactly my intentions with my Digipak.

Audience Feedback

I decided to do some audience feedback on my Digipak as I wanted to get others opinions on whether my digipak is any good, as a digipak. I also wanted to see if there were any improvements I could make and it'd be interesting to see what people thought were good and bad.

My results were very positive in general. As shown above the results for questions such as "Do you find the design above to be visually appealing?", "Could you imagine seeing my covers on real products?" and "How engaging is the design?" were very positive with most answer stating "Yes" and "Very engaging" which is great news as it shows that my Digipak is a success to the majority which is very important when making a cover because if it was unpopular there is no point. I also asked about improvements and I had some very interesting point and a lot that I personally already agreed with. One saying the writing and font doesn't work with the background and it'd be better centred, and I agree and if I were to do it again I think I would change the font and layout of the text on the back.
